To be a leader in advocating and ensuring the advancement of black professionals in the built environment and all engineering fields
Representing black technical professionals since 1990
The South African Black Technical and Allied Careers Organisation (SABTACO) is a national professional body representing black technical professionals across the built environment and engineering sectors. Established in 1990, at a pivotal moment in South Africa's transition to democracy, we were founded with a clear mandate: to address the underrepresentation of black professionals in technical fields and to create pathways for their full participation in shaping the country's infrastructure and built environment.
Over three decades, we have built a national presence across all nine provinces. Our membership spans practitioners, graduates, technicians, and students across 14+ technical disciplines — from civil and structural engineering to architecture, quantity surveying, project management, and town planning.
We hold formal seats on major national industry bodies including the JBCC, BEPSA, SAFE, and the IBACF, and maintain active relationships with government departments at ministerial level.
To facilitate the creation of an environment conducive to the development and promotion of science and engineering skills in the black community, and to enable effective utilisation of technology for the socio-economic development of South Africa.
The optimal realisation of current and future potential of technical skills in South Africa.
